Parallel lines are two lines that never meet. They may be several feet apart, or they may be just an inch apart --- they will never touch each other.
A good example of parallel lines is Mom and the edge of the bed. Look carefully and you will see that, although there is scarcely an inch between the edge of Mom and the edge of the bed, they never touch each other.
Perpendicular lines are lines that meet at right angles to each other. Where they touch each other makes a right angle.
A really good example of perpendicular lines is Arn and Mom in the bed. You can see that Arnold's hind toes touch Mom's back. See... when he stretches his toes his hind legs push on Mom's back at a right angle. There's almost enough force to make the edge of Mom touch the edge of the bed. But not quite.
